Wellington, 30 May: Starting July 2, Air New Zealand will begin weighing passengers leaving on foreign flights from Auckland foreign Airport, according to media reports on Tuesday.

According to CNN, the scheme, known as a passenger weight survey, is a mechanism for the airline to collect data on the weight load and distribution of flights.

“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft — from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold,” said Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement expert, in a statement.

“We use average weights for customers, crew, and cabin bags, which we get from this survey.”

The airline said that it would make the data anonymous in order to safeguard people’ privacy.

According to CNN, as part of the scheme, passengers will be asked to stand on a digital scale upon checking in for their trip.

The weight information is subsequently sent to the survey but is not shown on the agent’s screen.

They will also weigh their bags separately on another similar scale.

“We understand that getting on the scales might be intimidating. We wish to reassure our consumers that no visual display is present anywhere. “No one, not even us, can see your weight,” James was reported as adding in the statement.
