Jammu, May 24: Grievance Redressal Officers for Persons with Disability have been appointed in all relevant departments in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

These officers have been appointed, per a notice published here today, to guarantee that people with disabilities have access to basic civil liberties like voting and holding public office, as well as protections against harassment and abuse because of their disability.

According to the publication, some concepts for empowering people with disabilities are mandated under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. These included, but were not limited to, nondiscrimination; full and effective participation and inclusion in society; acceptance of persons with disabilities as a part of human diversity and humanity; equality of opportunity; accessibility; gender equality; respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities; and respect for the inherent dignity of all people.

The Jammu and Kashmir Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2021, were drafted by the Social Welfare Department of the government to put the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 into effect, according to the announcement.

The Grievance Redressal Officer designated by each department is required by subrule (2) of Rule 14 of the Jammu and Kashmir Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2021 to keep a register of complaints made by persons with disabilities. This register must include information such as the date of the complaint, the name of the complainant, the name of the person conducting the inquiry into the complaint, the location where the incident occurred, the name of the business or individual against whom the complaint is lodged, and a summary of
