The Agriculture, Animal, and Sheep Husbandry departments were reviewed in a high-level meeting called by Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Vikas Kundal on May 22.

The forum highlighted the district’s dedication to agricultural growth and shined light on many critical issues. A total of 4900 quintals of seeds, as opposed to the necessary 5600 quintals for the Kharif season, have been kept throughout various Panchayats and blocks, as was noted at the discussion. The Deputy Commissioner was pleased to report that there was a sufficient supply of seeds and fertilisers to maintain normal agricultural activities.

At the meeting, the Chief Agricultural Officer (CAO) reported that 51,500 hectares of land were being farmed in preparation for kharif. He said, “Maize dominates the farming landscape, with cultivation spread across 40,500 hectares; next come paddy at 5,000 hectares; then pulses at 2,000 hectares; then fodder at 4,000 hectares; and finally oilseeds at 100 hectares.”

In addition, since this is a special year for millets, the relevant agency intends to distribute free millets seeds and plant them over 600 acres of land. Four varieties of millets, including bajra, kodo, finger millet, and foxtail, were specifically mentioned by the CAO.

The Deputy Commissioner checked up on the progress of the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana) across the district. He emphasised spreading the word about the advantages of the plan and making sure that farmers were properly insured.
