Ramban, June 14: On Wednesday, the flow of vehicle traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway between the Nashri and Banihal sectors was obstructed for more than 12 hours owing to a variety of factors. According to the authorities in charge of regulating traffic, the roadway was closed for a total of 12 hours and 10 minutes during the course of the previous 24 hours, up until 5 p.m. on Wednesday. According to what they stated, the Chenani-Nashri tunnel was closed for three hours and 52 minutes, while the Banihal-Qaziqund tunnel was closed for three hours and 25 minutes. As a result, the highway was stopped for a total of six hours and 25 minutes.
They said that the highway was closed at Hingni in the Nachlana region between Ramsu and Banihal owing to an overturned vehicle in the middle of the road for three hours and 45 minutes and that the rolling of stones from the hills on the Mehar-Cafeteria section of Ramban caused the highway to be shut for one hour and seven minutes.
The authorities said that the passage of traffic remained sluggish owing to the single-lane road stretch at Dalwass and other areas, as well as due to the breakdown of 12 heavy trucks that occurred between the Nashri and Banihal sectors of the highway on Wednesday.
Despite the interruption, hundreds of light and medium passenger cars travelled the Nashri-Banihal section of the highway throughout the day, according to personnel monitoring the management of traffic on the highway in Ramban who briefed Greater Kashmir.
They said that large cars that are transporting crucial supplies for the valley in Kashmir are still passing the Nashri Ramban area and are moving towards Kashmir at a sluggish speed on the highway. Kashmir is located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
After conducting an inspection of the road and traffic conditions along the highway on Wednesday morning, the Jammu and Kashmir traffic police department issued a new advisory for Thursday. The advisory stated that heavy vehicles would be permitted to travel from Qaziqund-Kashmir in the direction of Jammu, whereas private cars, passenger light vehicles, and medium vehicles would be permitted to ply on either side of the highway, subject to favourable weather conditions and road clearance.
