Bhaderwah, May 19: A fire in Doda on Friday destroyed three mud huts inhabited by tribal Gujjar family, destroying property valued at tens of thousands of rupees.
SDPO Gandoh Adil Rishu confirmed the fire, saying that three homes in the Dhadkai district of the Gandoh Sub Division were damaged.
Three families in the tribe lost their homes in the blaze.
At one in the morning, a fire broke out, and despite the efforts of the villagers, the homes of three brothers were completely destroyed. However, thanks to the quick work of the people, the homes next door were spared.
SDPO said that three families, including Jamat Ali, Lal Hussain, and Mohd Israel, who had previously lived in neighbouring homes, were left homeless.
According to SSP Doda, Abdul Qayoom, hundreds of residents responded to the blaze as soon as they heard the news, but the blaze was so severe that the whole home was destroyed.
SSP said, “We have registered a case regarding this accident and the report will be submitted to DC, so that process for compensation should be processed at the earliest.”
According to BDC chairman Gandoh Mohd Hanief, after receiving a fire alarm, everyone rushed to the scene to put out the blaze using whatever resources were available.
He said that residents worked quickly to put out the fire and rescue the neighbouring homes.
He said that the fire got out of control because rescuers took so long to get to the region since there were no roads leading to the community.
The chairman said, “The lack of road infrastructure has proven to be a major hurdle in dealing with emergencies effectively.”
The residents voiced their dismay over the tragedy and urged the district administration to quickly resolve the problem of road accessibility. They demanded that something be done right once to avoid future tragedies and provide help to affected areas as soon as possible.
They also asked the district government for help right away.
