16 May, Srinagar: Officials in Jammu and Kashmir said that, despite forecasts for largely dry weather with the risk of rain and thundershowers at scattered areas, Tuesday night temperatures rose slightly but remained below average throughout the region.

GNS cited an official from the meteorological department in reporting that Srinagar’s low temperature was 10.7 degrees Celsius, down from 9.6 degrees the night before and 0.7 degrees below typical for the summer capital.

He said that Qazigund, the entrance to Kashmir, had a low of 7.4 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night’s 7.0 degrees, and 2.8 degrees Celsius below usual.

He said that Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, saw a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius, the same as the previous night and 2.4 degrees Celsius below average.

According to him, the mercury dropped to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit in Kupwara town, which is 2.9 degrees below usual for the north Kashmir region.

The temperature in Kokernag dropped to 8.4 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees below average) on Sunday night, down from 7.2 the night before.

According to him, the famed ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla region had a low of 5.8 degrees Fahrenheit, down from 2.5 degrees the night before, and 1.0 degrees below average.

According to him, the overnight low in Jammu was 23.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.9 degrees Celsius lower than average for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal had a low of 10.5 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees below average), while Batote saw 14.9 degrees (0.8 degrees above normal), Katra saw 20.1 degrees (0.8 degrees below normal), and Bhaderwah saw 9.8 degrees (0.6 degrees below normal). The temperature in Leh, Ladakh, dropped to 0.8 degrees, he added.

He said that throughout the following 24 hours, it will be partly cloudy with a chance of rain or thunderstorms in a few locations. He predicted that rain and thunderstorms will hit here and there from the 17th to the 20th of May. He reaffirmed that significant precipitation is not expected for the following week.
