Jammu, June 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD) stated on Tuesday that Jammu City would not have power restriction from June 20 due to the sweltering heat.

A JKPDD spokeswoman said that rural/unmetered regions would have power cuts under 6 hours.

Recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir’s power sector, such as the 900 MW Baglihar HEP, which was generating at a reduced capacity due to low river Chenab discharge, have improved power supply.

Due to enhanced output in central Sector hydro generators such Naptha Jhakri, Koldam, and Tehri, the Government of India has allocated 200 MW more electricity from hydro producing stations outside J&K from which J&K buys power. Thermal generation has increased by 60 MW, increasing electricity allotment to J&K.

The JKPDD spokeswoman said that in this digital age, power producing businesses (gencos) have strict payment security measures, requiring JKPDD to pay for electricity in advance. The government noted that J&K is charging residential users a substantially subsidised average rate of Rs. 3 per unit while market power procurement prices are rising from Rs. 5 to Rs. 7.

In view of the aforementioned, the JKPDD spokesman has urged the public to use power wisely and pay their energy bills on time to help JKPDD pay gencos and maintain power supply during peak summer days.
