Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Brigadier General (Ret.) BD Mishra, made a momentous declaration today, stating that only local youth should be eligible for recruitment in the Union Territory, for both gazetted and non-gazetted positions.

Brig Mishra, speaking to media at an event in Kargil, said that the creation of employment and the filling of vacancies were two things that should be prioritised.

If not the neighbourhood, then who else. Indeed, I do agree. When asked whether a Ladakh Resident Certificate (LRC) would be required to work in the Union Territory, he answered, “All vacancies should go to locals.”

“We will do this,” he continued. Brig Mishra has said that he would summon a meeting of the University Governing Council to explore the problem of filling vacancies at the University.

“Whatever decision is in the public interest will be taken,” he continued. He said that Sankhoo is in the running for a college spot.

Locals in Ladakh have been pushing for the Union Territory to only hire people with Ladakh Resident Certificates.

The Lieutenant Governor also observed progress on the Eastern Portal of the Zojila tunnel in the Kargil area.

The LG Ladakh was joined on his trip to the Zojila tunnel by civil and police administration officials as well as the local Lok Sabha member and BJP leader, Jamyang Tsering Namgayal. Brig. Mishra was updated by the relevant personnel on the progress being made on the tunnel.

The Lieutenant Governor also made sure the workers were doing well by inquiring about their well-being and instructing the Superintendent of Police in Kargil to take swift legal action against those responsible for the delays in salary payments.
