MeT anticipates additional rain as temperatures in J&K fall below average

Srinagar, May 26: The meteorological department in Jammu and Kashmir forecasted widespread intermittent light to moderate rain, thunder and lightning, with the chance of hailstorm and gusty winds during the next 24 hours on Friday.

GNS stated on May 27-28 that occasional light rain, thunder, and lightning were forecast in a few spots, citing a meteorological department official.

The Met Department predicts “fairly widespread intermittent light to moderate rain, thunder and lightning, with the possibility of hailstorm and gusty winds in a few places” from May 29-30.

The MeT department also advised farmers to halt all farming activities on May 29 and 30.

In terms of temperature, he said that Srinagar recorded a low of 9.4°C, compared to 10.8°C the previous night, and that it was 2.6°C below usual for the summer capital.

He said that Qazigund recorded a low of 7.0°C, down from 8.0°C the night before, and that it was 3.7°C below typical for the Kashmir gateway town.

Pahalgam, he added, had a low of 4.8°C, down from 6.1°C the night before, and was 1.3°C below typical for the popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

He said the temperature in Kupwara town had dropped to 9.3°C from 11.4°C the night before, which was 1.3°C below typical for the north Kashmir region.

Kokernag reported a low of 6.0°C, compared to 7.4°C the previous night, which was 4.6°C below typical for the area, according to authorities.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.2°C, down from 5.0°C the night before, and was 4.9°C below average for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he added.

He claimed Jammu recorded a low of 19.4°C, compared to 21.4°C the previous night, and that it was 5.5°C below typical for J&K’s winter capital.

Banihal had a low of 8.5°C (3.7°C below normal), Batote 11.5°C (3.5°C below normal), Katra 16.5°C (5.1°C below normal), and Bhaderwah 8.5°C (2.6°C below normal). He reported a low of 1.2°C at Leh, Ladakh.
