MeT anticipates additional rain as temperatures in J&K fall below average

While the morning and early afternoon will be sunny and pleasant, a “brief spell” of rain and thunderstorms is possible in the late afternoon and evening, according to a meteorological department official who spoke with GNS.
The forecast calls for mostly clear weather. Regarding the following 24 hours, he stated, “However, a brief spell of rain/thunderstorm at scattered places towards late afternoon/evening can’t be ruled out.”
He predicted that the period from May 20-23 will be mostly dry. It’s possible, he added, “although chances are less,” that there might be a short rain/thunderstorm at certain points in the late afternoon/early evening.

The official warned that rain and snow were “very likely” over the mountaintops from May 24th to the 26th. He warned that “heavy rain” might fall in certain areas.

According to him, the temperature dropped to 9.2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, two degrees below the typical for the summer capital, compared to 13.7 degrees Celsius the night before.

According to him, Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, dropped to 7.0 degrees Celsius at night, which is 3.2 degrees Celsius cooler than average.

He said that Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, saw a low of 2.7 degrees Celsius, down from 7.4 degrees the night before and 3.2 degrees below average.

According to him, the mercury dropped to 6.7 degrees Fahrenheit in Kupwara town last night, down from 8.4 degrees the night before, and 3.4 degrees Fahrenheit below typical for the north Kashmir region.

Officials reported a low temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius in Kokernag, which was 2.8 degrees Celsius below the usual for the area the previous night.

The temperature at Gulmarg, a popular ski destination in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, dropped to 3.0 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, down from 4.6 degrees the night before and 3.8 degrees cooler than typical.

According to him, the overnight low in Jammu was 21.0°C, down from 24.0°C the night before, and 3.1°C below usual for J&K’s winter capital.

For comparison, the lows in these other locations were as follows: 10.1°C in Banihal (1.6°C below normal), 12.2°C in Batote (1.9°C below normal), 18.2°C in Katra (2.7°C below normal), and 8.4°C in Bhaderwah (2.0°C below normal). The lowest temperatures in Ladakh were 2.6 degrees Celsius in Leh and 6.5 degrees Celsius in Kargil, he added. (GNS)
