Srinagar, 22 June Officials in Jammu and Kashmir reported Thursday nighttime temperatures above average throughout the region, despite predictions of hot and humid conditions.

According to GNS, which cited an official from the meteorological department, Srinagar had a low of 20.5 degrees Celsius, up from the previous night’s 19.7 degrees Celsius, and 4.79 degrees Celsius above usual for the summer capital.

He said that Qazigund, the entrance to Kashmir, had a low of 17.2 degrees Celsius, up from 17.4 degrees the night before and 2.9% higher than average.

According to him, the temperature at Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, dropped to 11.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius) on Sunday night, up from 10.6 degrees the night before.

He said that the mercury in Kupwara town dipped to 17.4 degrees Celsius at night, up from 16.5 the night before; this was 3.3 degrees Celsius warmer than average for the region of north Kashmir.

The overnight low temperature in Kokernag was 17.7 degrees Celsius, which is 3.6 degrees Celsius higher than average for the area, as reported by the relevant authorities.

He reported an increase of 3.8 degrees Fahrenheit over usual temperatures in the Baramulla area of north Kashmir, where the popular ski town of Gulmarg is located.

According to him, the overnight low in Jammu was 27.8 degrees Celsius, which is 4.7 degrees Celsius more than average for the winter capital of J&K.

The lowest temperature was recorded at Bhaderwah at 20.0 degrees Celsius, which is 5.1 degrees Celsius over normal, followed by Batote at 21.1 degrees Celsius (3.9 degrees Celsius above normal), Katra at 27.2 degrees Celsius (5.2 degrees below average), and finally Banihal at 19.8 degrees Celsius (4.7 degrees Celsius above normal). Leh and Kargil, both in Ladakh, had temperatures as low as 5.2°C and 13.4°C, respectively.

To to his forecast: “a brief spell of shower and thunderstorm at one or two places towards late afternoon or evening can’t be ruled out” till June 23.

It will be overcast with occasional mild to moderate thundershowers throughout a large portion of the country from June 24th to the 28th, he added. It’s possible that certain areas of Jammu Division would see heavy rain for a brief time, he added.
