14 June, New Delhi: As part of a ceremony honouring the life and service of Lt. General PS Bhagat, Indian Army Chief of Staff Gen. Manoj Pande said on Wednesday that Pakistani POWs from the 1971 war wished their own officers were as caring as their Indian counterparts.

Central command (headed by Lt. Gen. Bhagat) was responsible for housing 90,000 Pakistani POWs after the 1971 Indo-Pak War. This required immediate building of shelters, supply of facilities, setting up of logistics, assuring security measures, and coordination,” General Pande stated during a memorial speech. According to him, Lt. Gen. Bhagat made sure that, in accordance with the Geneva Convention, the POWs had access to all the services to which they were entitled, including as commissaries, post offices, and medical care.
