The prime minister conducted “Ganapati Homam” to beseech Gods to bless the opening of the new Parliament building, amidst Vedic chanting by monks from Karnataka’s Shringeri Math.

With the sacred sceptre in hand, the prime minister prostrated before the “Sengol” and sought blessings from high priests of several adheenams in Tamil Nadu.

Modi then led the ‘Sengol’ in a parade to the new Parliament building, where it was set in a special enclosure on the right side of the Speaker’s chair in the Lok Sabha chamber, to the music of ‘nadaswaram’ and chanting of Vedic mantras.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, and Jitendra Singh were present, as were chief ministers from numerous states and BJP president J P Nadda.

The prime minister honoured some of the employees who were instrumental in the construction of the new Parliament building. (Agencies)
