Srinagar, June 27: During a gunfight on Tuesday in the Kulgam area of south Kashmir, police and security forces shot and killed an Al-Badr attacker, police said. During the shootout, a police officer was also hurt.

“Based on specific information that a terrorist was in the village of Hawoora in the Kulgam area, the J&K Police, Army (1st RR), and CRPF (18 Bn) launched a joint cordon and search operation in the area,” a police official said in a statement.

“During the search operation, as the joint search party got closer to the place where the terrorist was thought to be hiding, the terrorist opened fire on the joint search party. One J&K police officer was hurt and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. The attacker who was hiding was also given a chance to turn himself in, but he kept shooting at the joint troops. Effectively, the fire was returned, which led to a confrontation.”

In the fight that followed, a local terrorist who was part of the banned terrorist group Al-Badr was killed, and his body was taken from the scene of the fight. He is Adil Majeed Lone, the son of Abdul Majeed Lone and a resident of Kulgam’s Akbarabad Hawoora, said an official.

“Criminal evidence, weapons, and ammo, including a pistol with live bullets and a grenade, were found at the site of the meeting. All of the items that were found have been put in the case files so that they can be looked into further.”

A case has been filed under the relevant parts of the law, and more research is going on. “People are asked to work with police until the area at the site of the encounter is completely cleaned and cleared of any explosives,” the official said.
