The state visit of the Prime Minister to the United States, planned for June 21–25, coincides with the International Day of Yoga.

Vice President Joe Biden extended an invitation to him.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating 21 June as International Day of Yoga on 11 December 2014, acknowledging the practice’s widespread popularity. According to the UN guideline, “International Yoga Day is a global effort to spread the word about the health and wellness benefits of yoga.”

India submitted the resolution that would create the International Day of Yoga, and an unprecedented 175 countries voted in favour of it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi originally proposed this during his speech to kick off the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly,” it said.
