On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the commemorative currency in honour of India’s 75th anniversary of independence.

The Ashoka Lion Capital will adorn one side of the coin, while the slogan “Satyamev Jayate” will appear on the other. On the left side, the word “Bharat” will be written in the Devanagari script, while on the right, the term “India” will be written in English.

Below the Lion Capital, the coin’s denomination value of 75 will be inscribed in international numbers, and the rupee symbol will also be included.

The coin’s reverse will have an illustration of the legislative building. Upper and lower borders will read “Sansad Sankul” in Devanagari script and “Parliament Complex” in English, respectively.

The coin will be 44 millimetres in diameter and have 200 serrations around its circumference. The alloy used to strike the 35-gram coin will consist of 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc.

Modi will be the one to officially open the new parliament building this coming Sunday. At least 20 opposition parties, out of a possible 25, have planned to skip the ceremony in protest.

Several political parties, including Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Left, Trinamool, and Samajwadi Party, have said that they would not attend the inauguration because they see no need in attending now that the “soul of democracy has been sucked out” of the country.

Many in the opposition are upset that Prime Minister Modi would be the one to officially open the new parliament building rather than President Droupadi Murmu.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has responded strongly to the opposition’s intention to boycott the inauguration by calling it a “blatant affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation.”
