Rajouri, India – On June 26, inhabitants of the isolated hamlet of Kote Charwal in Rajouri began renovating the main road in an effort to reduce the number of accidents in the area.

A few months ago, the road was blacktopped, but since then, it has grown several large potholes. According to those who were born and raised in the region, the major route that leads to Kote Charwal from Gundha Khawas is also an important one. This is due to the fact that it links the tehsil districts of Khawas with the more distant area of Kote Charwal.

Kote Charwal is one of the far-flung, isolated, and undeveloped places in the district. It takes more than four hours to get from the district headquarter following recent road connection, however in the past, people had to hike for virtually the whole day in order to get to this hamlet.

According to those who live in the area, a road that runs from Gundha Khawas to Kote Charwal was just recently constructed and paved, but it has already begun to deteriorate owing to the poor quality of the work that was done on it.

According to what they claimed, large potholes on the road encourage accidents, and even a slight accident is like a nightmare in this region since there are absolutely no healthcare facilities accessible.

“We made repeated pleas before the department to repair and maintain this freshly built road but to no avail,” said the Sarpanch of Odhan panchayat, Chowdhary Kalu Khan. “There has been no response to any of our requests.”

He reported that a large group of local people had gathered in the vicinity and had made some fundamental improvements to the route.

“We have done temporary repairs including filling of potholes but this is temporary as only the concerned department can repair the road properly,” said the Sarpanch while citing poor quality of work done on this road and requesting an in-depth investigation into the matter. “We have done temporary repairs including filling of potholes but this is temporary as only the concerned department can repair the road properly,” added the Sarpanch.

It was suggested by him and other residents that the government should promptly restore this road without making any more delays in order to make it easier for people living in the vicinity to travel on the surface.
