According to a Fire & Emergency Department spokesman, the fire started in a three-story hardware shop building.
“The news about the fire at Batamaloo was received around 2 p.m., after which Fire & Emergency Services personnel and machinery rushed to the scene and began dousing the flames,” Division Fire Officer (DFO) Tasaduk Ahmad said.

According to him, the fire started on the top floor and spread throughout the rest of the structure.

“It took us six long hours to douse the fire because the building contains paint, tarpin and petroleum products, as well as PVC pipes and other hardware items,” he said.

“We have complete control of the situation,” the officer said, adding that firemen from nineteen receiving stations are on the scene. In addition, around twenty cars are dousing the flames.”

Tasaduk said that the operation lasted six hours and that one truck was placed on standby at the scene to prevent any untoward incidents since the building holds petroleum products.
