With the exception of Pahalgam and Kupwara, the nighttime temperature was below average in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday as the rains continued to pour down.

The weather service also predicts that through Friday, there will be widespread, sporadic light to moderate rain, thunder, lightning, and the chance of hail in a select few locations.

A meteorological department official stated that in the previous 24 hours until 0830 hours today, Srinagar got 16.2mm of rain, Qazigund 7.6mm, Pahalgam traces, Kupwara 0.4mm, Kupwara 10.6mm, Gulmarg 8.8mm, Jammu 1.3mm, Banihal 11.8mm, Botote 33.6mm, Katra 4.8mm and Bhaderwah 13.4mm.

In terms of temperature, he said that Srinagar had a low of 11.6°C, down from 11.8°C the night before, and below typical by 0.9°C for the summer capital.

He said that Qazigund, the entrance to Kashmir, had a low of 10.2 degrees Celsius, which was 0.9 degrees higher than typical.

He said that Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, had a nighttime low of 7.8 degrees Celsius, up from the 8.8 degrees recorded the night before.

He said that the mercury in Kupwara town dipped to 11.2 degrees Celsius at night, which was the same as the previous night but 0.2 degrees Celsius higher than average for the north Kashmir region.

The overnight low in Kokernag was 9.1 degrees Celsius, which is 2.0 degrees below the average for the area, as reported by the authorities.

The temperature at Gulmarg, a popular ski destination in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, dropped to 5.0 degrees Celsius from 4.0 degrees the night before, falling 2.6% short of the usual.

When compared to the previous night’s temperature of 20.6 degrees Celsius, Jammu’s low of 18.0 degrees Celsius was 7.5 degrees Celsius below typical for J-K’s winter capital.

The lowest temperature was 10.5 degrees Celsius in Banihal, 11.7 degrees Celsius in Batote, 16.1 degrees Celsius in Katra, and 10.8 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah (all below average by varying amounts). The temperature in Leh, Ladakh, dropped to 4.8 degrees, he added. (GNS)
