Improve access to veterinary care by: Rupala, Union Minister

The situation in Srinagar on June 2nd. On Friday, Parshottam Rupala, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, stated that the Animal Husbandry Department has to make more of an effort to improve access to veterinary health services in order to reduce economic losses caused by animal illnesses.

While in Srinagar chairing an inter-session meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to his ministry, an official spokesman here reported that Rupala emphasised the importance of India’s vast livestock and poultry resource in bettering the lives of rural people.

The meeting was also attended by L. Murugan, Member of Parliament (MP), Sanjeev Kumar Baliyan, Minister of State (MoS) for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying-I; and Members of Parliament (MP).

Concerning “strengthening of veterinary services through mobile units and implementation of vaccination programmes in the country,” the committee discussed a wide range of topics.

In addition to praising the Department’s efforts, Members of Parliament (MPs) offered a number of suggestions for how the Department could improve the veterinary services that are currently available, many of which focused on the Department’s Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) that have uniform toll-free number (1962) and 100% central assistance. The minister promised the committee that the relevant agency will act on their recommendations.
