Srinagar, July 15: The death toll from this year’s annual pilgrimage to Amarnath stands at 24 after five pilgrims lost their lives in the previous 36 hours.

High altitude sickness from lack of oxygen followed by cardiac arrest was blamed for the majority of these fatalities, according to officials.

It was stated that one of the fatalities happened on the Baltal road, while four occurred along the Pahalgam route. One of the dead was an ITBP officer who was killed while on duty during the Yatra. According to the authorities, the victims were from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Gujarat.

Located at an elevation of 3,888 metres above sea level lies the sacred cave of Amarnath.

Because of this, the free kitchens (Langars) set up for the Yatris have outlawed all forms of junk food.

Parathas, puris, sweets and cold drinks all fall within the halwai category, which has been outlawed.

Cigarette sales have also been restricted inside the Yatra’s transit and base camps.

Yatra, which began on July 1 and will last till the Shravan Purnima festival on August 31, will last 62 days this year.
