In an instance of medical malpractice, surgeons at a private hospital in Bihar’s Vaishali district left a surgical sponge in a woman’s tummy after a caesarean section.

A woman named Sulekha Devi was brought to Sadar Hospital in July after experiencing labour pains. The physicians performed a C-section on her and delivered a healthy baby, but they left a piece of surgical sponge in her tummy.

“Since giving birth on July 14, my wife has been complaining of abdominal pain. She tried a number of drugs, but none of them helped.” Recently, a physician from a private hospital requested an ultrasound and CT scan, during which the sponge was found,” said Dharmendra Kumar, a native of Hajipur city’s Chimnipur neighbourhood.

“We immediately lodged a complaint in this regard with the civil surgeon of Vaishali, who assured us of a befitting action,” Kumar said.

This is an instance of extreme neglect. Dr. Shyamnandan Prasad, a civil surgeon for the Vaishali district, said that a quick procedure will be performed to remove the foreign body.
