Afreen Hyder of Srinagar earned the first-ever senior silver medal for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (JK-UT) in the history of J&K Taekwondo in the full-contact sparring discipline of Kyorugi.

Hyder, who represented Jammu and Kashmir, won the medal in the 39th National Senior Taekwondo Championship, which took place in Guwahati, Assam, from September 9 to 11.

The All Assam Taekwondo Association organised the Championship, which was sanctioned by the Taekwondo Federation of India and approved by the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

In the tournament, Afreen enjoyed a string of victories that began with her first bout against Rajasthan, which she won 5-0, 9-8; and her second battle against Sikkim, which she won 13-01, 15-01.

Similar results were achieved by Hyder in her third fight against Manipur (7-0, 02-01) and her fourth battle against Madhya Pradesh (02-01, 03-01); however, her winning streak was ended by Kerala in the final round.

Afreen began studying Taekwondo in 2016, and she subsequently relocated to Madhya Pradesh to further her training.
