After a seven-year hiatus, Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Iran.

An unnamed foreign Ministry source told IRNA, “The Saudi Arabian Embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially commenced its activities and has been operating since Sunday, August 6.”

The foreign ministries of Iran and Saudi Arabia issued a joint declaration on April 6 to restart flights, restore diplomatic ties, and increase bilateral cooperation.

The action is in conformity with an agreement struck by Iran and Saudi Arabia in Beijing on March 10 that was negotiated by China.

Direct flights, increased commerce, and repaired diplomatic ties are all things that may benefit from the restored embassy.

The Iranian Embassies in Riyadh and Jeddah, as well as the Permanent Mission of Iran to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), reopened on Tuesday, June 6.

After protests in 2016 over the death of a Shiite religious leader by the Sunni-majority Kingdom, Riyadh suspended diplomatic relations with Tehran. (Agencies)
