Kurnool: Farmers in the Kurnool and Nandyal districts of Andhra Pradesh are discarding tomatoes on the roadways since the wholesale market price has fallen to Rs 3 per kg.

Tomatoes were recently being sold for between Rs 150 and Rs 200 per kilogramme, but today farmers are just dumping the same vegetable on the highways.

In the Nandyal district’s Pyapili market, the cost fell to Rs 3 per kilogramme on Thursday. Farmers left their tomatoes on the highways or in open spaces in the villages after realising that by selling tomatoes for such a cheap price, they would not be able to recoup their work and transportation costs.

The Dhone National Highway was surrounded by farmers who dumped hundreds of tonnes of tomatoes. On the piles of tomatoes, cattle could be seen eating.

Prices have dropped significantly over the last several days as a result of increased output after significant rain.

In the Chittoor district’s Madanapalle market, prices have similarly plummeted.

You may remember that the unprecedented surge in tomato prices from July to August led to the billionaire status of certain farmers in Telugu states. When a tomato farmer from the Chittoor area earned an incredible Rs 4 crore in 45 days, he or she had essentially struck the jackpot.

The 48-year-old farmer travelled his harvest to adjoining Karnataka in order to sell it there since it brought in greater prices in addition to the Madanapalle tomato market.
