Baramulla, Oct. 8: The Baramulla district administration has been urged by the commuters and residents of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district to instruct the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Project Beacon authorities to macadamize the road at the construction site of the ongoing flyover at Sangrama, Sopore.

Locals claim that since the executing agency began widening the road and building the flyover at Sangrama, Sopore, the road close to the flyover, through which traffic is diverted from Srinagar and Baramulla towards Sopore, has fallen into disrepair, posing a severe hardship for both commuters and the locals here.

Local resident Farooq Ahmad said that the dust coming from the road has made people’s lives miserable and caused serious respiratory issues in some of them.

He said that whereas a local living next to the road must always shutter the window panes of their homes in order to avoid the dust, a commuter may only pass by the road while wearing a facemask.

Due to the poorly maintained roads, Ahmad said that the locals were suffering greatly. The elderly are particularly impacted because of their respiratory problems brought on by the constant presence of a heavy coating of dust.

When criticising the BRO officials, Muhammad Shaban, another Sangrama, Sopore resident, claimed that after the road was widened and the Sangrama flyover was constructed, the authorities ought to have macadamized the section of the road that traffic from Srinagar and Baramulla uses to travel to Sopore and Kupwara.

Muhammad Shaban added, “The authorities need to look into the matter so that residents of the area do not experience hardships.”

In a recent meeting, Syed Sehrish Asghar, the deputy commissioner (DC) for Baramulla, requested that the BRO officials speed up the construction of the road at the Sangrama intersection to minimise disturbance to the public.
