Ganderbal, Aug. 26: Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh said on Saturday that mediation was a useful method for resolving conflicts.

The Chief Justice declared that mediation was an effective tool for resolving disputes and that the general public should make an effort to resolve the disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms. The Chief Justice was speaking at the opening of a one-day awareness-cum-training programme on mediation for the members of Panchayati Raj Institutions, panel lawyers, and paralegal volunteers of the Kargil district.

The High Court in Kargil has for the first time organised such a seminar for the Panchayati Raj institutions, according to Chief Justice Singh, and such programmes are successful in educating the public about ADR techniques.

The importance of using mediation as a method for conflict resolution was emphasised by Justice Tashi Rabstan, Judge of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh and Chairman of the Mediation and Conciliation Committee.

He advised the attendees to get the most out of this training.

In the native tongue, Justice TashiRabstan also addressed the crowd. The District Court Complex in Kargil was inspected as well by Justice Rabstan.

The workshop was put on by the Ladakh Legal Services Authority in partnership with the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh’s Mediation and Conciliation Committee in Kargil.

The one-day awareness training on mediation’s launch is a crucial step towards realising the constitutionally mandated principle of equal access to justice.

Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain, a judge on the Delhi High Court, and Nagina Jain, an attorney and senior mediator, served as the program’s resource people.
