Srinagar, September 11: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called the Government of India’s decision to abolish extra tariffs on many American goods, including apples, walnuts, and almonds, “devastating” for the UT’s economy.

She voiced her thoughts on the Government of India’s decision through her X (previously known as Twitter) profile.

“The GOI’s decision to eliminate additional duties on apples, walnuts, and almonds will be devastating for local growers in J&K, who have already suffered massive losses since 2019.” “I’m hoping that @PMOIndia reconsiders,” she added.

Several American goods, including chickpeas, lentils, and apples, have been exempted from higher tariffs in India. These taxes were first implemented in 2019 in reaction to the United States’ decision to increase tariffs on certain steel and aluminium products. Initially, these retaliatory taxes were applied on 28 US imports.

In a notice issued on September 5, the Ministry of Finance announced the abolition of these tariffs on items such as chickpeas, lentils (masur), apples, walnuts in shells, fresh or dried almonds, and shelled almonds.
