Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that India places a particular emphasis on the nations of the Global South.

Speaking at the BRICS summit plenary in Johannesburg, he said: “We applaud the decision to give the countries of the global south additional relevance in BRICS under the presidency of South Africa. Under its G20 chairmanship, India has also given significance to this issue. “India fully supports the expansion of BRICS, and we welcome moving forward with consensus on this,” he said.

The Prime Minister said in his speech that in order to make BRICS a future-ready organisation, we must also make our various communities future-ready, and technology will play a significant part in this. “BRICS has embarked on a long and spectacular journey during the last 20 years. We achieved a lot on this path,” he said.

PM Modi offered the BRICS a plethora of recommendations for collaboration in a number of areas, including traditional medicine, big cat alliance, space, education, and skill development.

“The BRICS satellite constellation is already in the works. By moving ahead with this, we may seek to create a BRICS Space Exploration Consortium, he said. Second, he said that the BRICS countries can collaborate in the fields of technology, skill development, and education.

“We need to make our societies future-ready, in which technology can play an important role, to make BRICS a future-ready organisation,” Prime Minister Modi stated.

The third recommendation, according to the prime minister, is to map out skills by determining each other’s areas of strength.

Another idea was the Big Cat alliance, under which, according to Modi, the BRICS countries might work together to preserve the numerous cheetah and tiger varieties that can be found there.

In this regard, India would be pleased to share its knowledge with the BRICS countries since “India’s strength is unity in diversity and as all the nations have an ecosystem of traditional medicine,” Prime Minister Modi remarked.
