October 23 (ANI): New Delhi (India) On Monday, at the age of 77, famous spinner and former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi passed away.

The spinner, who was born in Amritsar and played for Delhi in the Indian Premier League, concluded his career with 1,560 first-class wickets, more than any other Indian player.

Anurag Thakur, the Union Sports Minister, made the following announcement: “Former India captain and spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has left. This is devastating news. This is a major setback for India. He set up a lot of camps in Himachal Pradesh. The whole cricket community has my full support as we mourn his passing.

Between 1967 and 1979, he played in 67 Tests for India, during which time he took 266 wickets. In addition, throughout 10 ODIs, he managed to pick up seven dismissals.


Bedi was a member of the legendary Indian spin four (together with EAS Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S Venkataraghavan) and played Test cricket for India from 1966 to 1979. This renowned spinner also led his country in 22 Test matches as captain.

In 1970, he also received the Padma Shri Award for his achievements. Bedi also spent a lot of time as a player for Northamptonshire in English county cricket.

Amit Shah, India’s Minister of Home Affairs, paid tribute to Bedi by praising his expertise in his sympathy statement.

I am really grieved to hear about the passing of Bishan Singh Bedi Ji, the great spinner and former captain of the Indian cricket team. Bedi Ji will be remembered as a cricket legend for his many accomplishments and as a maestro of cunning bowling who could work magic on the ground. The Minister of Home Affairs expressed his “deepest sympathies to his family and his many fans in this time of sorrow” in a Facebook post on X (ANI).
