11 July, Jammu: As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard the environment, the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee has today begun a campaign to educate people in the districts that make up the Jammu Division about the need of proper e-waste disposal.
K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary of the J&K Pollution Control Committee, hoisted the banner marking the official start of operations for the Mobile E-waste Collection van. VRG Groups, Jammu, a JKPCC Authorised Dismantler for E-waste, is helping with the door-to-door education campaign.
Other top officials of the Committee were Sat Paul (Regional Director), J.N. Sharma (EE), Anuradha (Nodal officer E-waste), and the rest of the Divisional officers and scientists in Jammu.
All of Jammu province’s districts will participate in the awareness and cum collecting effort till the end of the year.
The Member Secretary of the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) expressed gratitude to the PCC and M/s VRG Groups for leading the successful awareness campaign in Jammu. He brought attention to the fact that India is now the third greatest producer of electronic garbage worldwide, which is the most pressing environmental issue. The absence of a systematic approach to collecting and disposing of electronic and plastic garbage was also cited as a key source of environmental and health concerns.
After their useful lives are over, he said, electronics and electrical gadgets like computers, TVs, mobile phones, etc. are being tossed at an alarming rate, adding to the enormous quantity of E-waste.
Sat Paul, Regional Director, noted that improper disposal of electronic waste could cause irreparable harm to the environment and urged consumers to take responsibility for the safe collection and disposal of all electronic waste. He pleaded with the people to help make this effort a success and guarantee the secure distribution of E-waste.
