Srinagar, September 4: Former minister and chairman of the Peoples Democratic Front Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen said today that a strong opposition is essential for a healthy democracy because it corrects the errors of the governing party.
He expressed his hope in a statement that the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA block) will learn from previous errors, such as the sudden overthrow of democratically elected administrations in Jammu and Kashmir. “Not only was the former Jammu and Kashmir state’s prime minister dishonourably deposed and arrested, but the people’s very democratic and constitutional rights were also trampled with impunity, in the infamous coup on August 8, 1953,” Hakeem Yaseen said in response to the formation of the opposition bloc INDIA.
He said the roots of the current estrangement among the people of Jammu and Kashmir were planted as a result of this serious constitutional breach by some of the fundamental members of the INDIA opposition block.
