Bumhama residents in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district sought the upgradation of Girls Middle School to High School on Tuesday, alleging that previous dispensations had mistreated them.

Established in 1964, the school serves a large population, however it has not been updated despite several local requests.

The hamlet people informed Greater Kashmir that no one wants to upgrade this decades-old school.

Residents say their children are compelled to enroll at Drugmulla or Kupwara after 8th grade, which is affecting their education.

Girl students bear the burden since they must travel many km to reach Kupwara or Drugmulla. A villager said they could study in their community if the school was improved.

“I fail to understand why this school has not been upgraded despite being one of the oldest in Kupwara,” he said.

Locals have asked Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha to investigate and renovate this institution for pupils.
