There is considerable panic in the Mawar belt of Handwara, in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir, due to the sighting of a’man-eater’ bear on August 23.

According to a group of villagers quoted by GNS, a bear has attacked and killed at least one person and injured several more in recent months.

“The worst hit area where the’man-eater’ bear has caused panic and fear is Drangsoo Mawar,” they stated, adding that, as a result of repeated incidences, parents across the Mawar belt are fearful of sending their children to school.

The villagers have accused the government of being ineffective, saying that despite their repeated pleas, nothing has been done to ease people’s suffering.

Still, “we again earnestly appeal through this medium to the authorities to take the matter into consideration and take suitable action against the roaming bear at an earliest,” they stated.
