The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 tie-breaking mechanism has been revised by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This change, which was announced just before the March 16 extended registration deadline, would greatly affect the calculation of test scores.

Instead of using a computerized random number generator to break ties, we’ll go back to our original method of ranking based on the total number of right and wrong responses.

To resolve candidates’ scores that were tied, a computerized drawing of lots was used in the past. But this year, the NTA has decided to go back to the original method. The method uses the applicants’ total number of correct and incorrect responses to assign ranks.

Approximately 1.3 million women applied for the NEET UG 2024 test, while the total number of candidates has reportedly topped 2.5 million. Consequently, a great deal of pressure is on the test takers to do well. Applicants to the best dentistry and medical schools in the nation will now need to familiarize themselves with the new tie-breaking procedure and use it to determine their ranking. Also, getting into top medical schools in India depends on how well you do on the country’s biggest admission test, so the stakes are quite high.

On May 5, 2024, 544 test centers in India and 14 test centers outside of the country will hold the NEET UG exam in paper-and-pencil format, according to the official timetable.
Exam administrators have mandated a certain order for the three sciences as a means of breaking the tie: biology, chemistry, and physics. Next, candidates will be rated according to the percentage of accurate and erroneous responses throughout all programs, with a focus on the topics mentioned before.

This change is in response to a previous announcement by the National Medical Commission (NMC) that included a new mechanism in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 (GMER-23) to break ties. Nevertheless, the NTA intends to expedite the ranking process while also guaranteeing transparency and fairness in candidate placement decisions by doing away with the computerized draw mechanism.
At the same time, everyone who hasn’t already done so must apply at exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/ by today, March 16.

Nominees should visit the NTA homepage for the most up-to-date information.
