Modi tweeted that Vajpayee’s tenure as prime minister was beneficial to the country.

To the extraordinary Atal Ji, I add my respects on this, his Punya Tithi, together with the other 140 crore people of India. His tenure as prime minister was quite successful for India. He was instrumental in bringing many areas of our country into the 21st century and accelerating its progress.

Vajpayee, who was born in Gwalior in 1924, was the first non-Congress prime minister to have served a complete term in office and became the public face of the BJP for many years.

The first time was from May 16 to June 1, 1996, and the second time was from March 19 to May 22, 2004. Vajpayee was India’s prime minister both times. From 1977 to 1979, he was India’s Minister of External Affairs in Prime Minister Moraji Desai’s government. On August 16, 2018, he passed away at Delhi’s AIIMS Hospital.

To commemorate the former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna laureate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced December 25 as Good Governance Day annually after he came to power in 2014.
