On July 31 in Rajouri, residents of the Argi village area stopped the Dhangri Argi road in protest at the lack of a bridge across the river.
The protest was led by members of the local panchayat, and it included a sit-in on the road near Dhangri Argi.
The locals complain that the government has neglected to build a bridge over the river, forcing hundreds of people, including schoolchildren, to cross the river during the dangerous monsoon season. They said that they had repeatedly brought the need for a bridge here to the attention of the authorities with little success.
Vehicle traffic on this route was halted for more than two hours on Monday morning as a result of protests; thereafter, a team of officers from police station Rajouri arrived on the scene and told the demonstrators that their demand would be brought up with civil administration.
Locals called off their protests after receiving this guarantee.
