13 Sep in Sopore: Abdul Gani Vakil, a senior member of the Peoples Conference and a former minister, questioned the Central Government’s decision to eliminate extra taxes on apples, walnuts, and almonds imported from the US today.

He said in a statement that the GoI’s decision would come as yet another shock to Kashmir’s already indebted fruit producers.

“The fruit industry, notably farmers of walnut and almonds, have already suffered significant losses over the previous several years as a result of COVID-19, unrest, and unpredictable weather. And now that extra levies on these US-imported goods have been removed, the economy will suffer. Instead of making special announcements to help the fruit business recover from the losses it has suffered over the last several years, Vaklil remarked.

He pleaded with the Indian government to change its mind right now.
