According to the Income Tax Department, refunds have been given to 2.75 crore people. However, a significant portion of taxpayers have yet to reply to the letter or message with income tax questions on the mismatched data.
According to the government, such taxpayers should respond as quickly as possible so that their refund may be granted when the error has been corrected. According to data made public by the Income Tax Department, 7.09 crore returns for the assessment year 2023–24 had been submitted as of September. Out of them, 6.96 crore ITRs have been confirmed; 6.46 crore returns, including 2.75 crore refund refunds, have been processed so far.
The importance of prompt processing and refunds has been highlighted.
Refunds to taxpayers are owed in certain circumstances, according to the Income Tax Department. These taxpayers’ requested responses are still waiting. Before modifying the refund, the taxpayer must be given a chance to state their case in accordance with Section 245(1) of the Income Tax Act of 1961. The taxpayer must express whether they concur, disagree, or want further information in the response the Income Tax Department is requesting. As a result, information is being sent to taxpayers with historical demand.
The Income Tax Department said that taxpayers are urged to take advantage of this chance and provide the needed information in order to assist in the prompt distribution of refunds and to address outstanding requests.
