The President thanked all of the recipients of the Visitor’s Awards and praised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and his whole team for conceptualising and arranging this conference.

The unfortunate death of a 20-year-old IIT Delhi student by suicide was brought to the attention of the public by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi.

“On Saturday, a tragic occurrence occurred at IIT Delhi involving a 20-year-old student who took his own life. Numerous other schools have also had horrific acts of suicide by students. My presentation is not restricted to any one academic setting. Murmu has said that this should be a concern for the whole field of education.

She highlighted that schools should do all in their power to ensure their pupils are safe from bullying, harassment, and neglect on campus.

Teachers and school administrators have a responsibility to provide a calm learning environment for their kids. “Around 2500 students have dropped out of their IIT programmes midway, according to an analysis done by the central government in 2019 based on data from two years,” she said.

All of you, as instructors and staff, should be as attentive to the needs of the pupils as would be a wise and considerate leader or senior member of a joint family. The pupils and their families look to you as role models. It is your responsibility to ensure that students in dorms and dormitories at universities and colleges are provided with a safe and considerate atmosphere similar to that of their own homes, the President said.

Half of all college students identify as members of underrepresented groups. The bulk of the approximately 100 IIM dropouts were from traditionally underrepresented groups. She emphasised the need of taking the dropout problem seriously and finding a workable solution.

The President thanked all of the recipients of the Visitor’s Awards and praised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and his whole team for conceptualising and arranging this conference.

President Murmu told her audience about how she had to “move from my small village in Odisha to the city to study,” and then she said, “By creating an environment of sensitivity towards first-generation students coming to higher-educational institutions, all of you will be discharging an important social responsibility.”
