22 October, Srinagar: On Sunday, the army said that two infiltrators were killed when the police and army thwarted a terrorist infiltration attempt using heavy weapons along the line of control in the Uri region of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

In Uri Sector, Baramulla, security forces thwarted an attempt at infiltration. Troops were placed on high alert, and the counter-infiltration grid was tightened, according to a statement from the defence ministry. “Based on specific inputs from intelligence agencies and JK Police of likely infiltration in Uri Sector by heavily armed terrorists from across the LoC,” the statement said.

A group of armed terrorists tried to cross the LoC by taking advantage of the severe weather, which was characterised by nonstop rain and low visibility. A strong exchange of fire ensued when vigilant forces stopped the group at approximately 3 o’clock, it claimed, adding, “Intense firefight continued until last light, resulting in the elimination of two terrorists; the remaining terrorists withdrew to the enemy side of LoC along with the bodies of dead terrorists.”

It said that the location was kept under observation all night. Two AK-series rifles, six pistols, four Chinese grenades, blankets, and two blood-stained bags containing Pakistani and Indian currency notes, Pakistani medicines, and food were discovered during a thorough search of the incident site on October 22 and 23.

According to the army’s judgement, the discovery of two blood-stained bags proves that at least two of the militants were seriously wounded, causing them to abandon their shipment and cross the LoC.

“Search operations have been paused due to bad weather; they will continue when the weather improves. The operation is ongoing, it said. (GNS)
