Teams with a franchise

Eight franchise-based clubs from Australia’s various cities and regions make up the BBL. These teams are the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, and Melbourne Renegades.

Due to the franchise structure, local players have the opportunity to compete against top cricket players from across the world. The BBL has contributed to the rise to fame of well-known athletes including Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson, Lasith Malinga, Brendon McCullum, Glenn Maxwell, Rashid Khan, David Warner, Steve Smith, and Aaron Finch. The reputation of the BBL has increased because to these talented players.

Format BBL

Each club in the BBL format plays 14 matches in a round-robin stage, going up against every other team twice. The last three teams are eliminated, while the top five teams advance to the playoffs. The victor of the Eliminator match between the fourth-ranked team and the fifth-ranked club in the playoffs progresses.

The first qualifier then pits the top-ranked team against the runner-up. While the losing team is given a second chance, the winner advances straight to the championship game. Ultimately, the second finalist is decided by a knockout match and a challenger match.

The 2023–24 BBL season has undergone alterations thanks to Cricket Australia (CA). There will be 44 games in the season, which will begin on December 7. Each club will play 10 league games, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs, which will include four games and conclude with the championship game on January 24.

The last BBL playoffs had five teams and five knockout games, which is how this one differs.

Between December 14 and December 18, there will be a brief stoppage to accommodate Australia’s Test match against Pakistan in Perth. There won’t be a game on Christmas Eve, and the season won’t restart until the ninth match on December 19.

Large Prizes
The prize money for the BBL is one of its main draws. The BBL awards various prize sums according on how well teams perform. The team that finishes in fifth place receives AUD 30,000, or around INR 16.9 million. Every team that advances to the semifinals is awarded AUD 100,000, or around INR 56.7 million.

The Big Bash League champion and runner-up each get the top monetary awards. The winning team receives AUD 500,000, or around INR 284 million, while the runner-up receives AUD 250,000, or about INR 142 million.

The ‘X Factor’ and ‘Power Surge’ Rules
The Power Surge regulation, a two-over window when batters may only have two fielders beyond the 30-yard fielding circle, is unique to the BBL compared to the Indian Premier League (IPL). There are fewer deep fielders and fewer opportunities for catches as a result, allowing batters to take greater chances by hitting the ball in the air.

The fielding side may switch to a different bowler once they are aware of the Power Surge, which can be requested at the beginning of an over after the 11th. The first batting power play is now just four overs long thanks to this regulation, which also gives the game more tactical nuance.

The X Factor rule was also added to the BBL for the 2020–21 season. After the 10th over, teams may designate a 12th and 13th member in their lineups, as well as substitute one player from the beginning 11.

The player who is being substituted cannot have bowled more than one over and cannot have batted yet. The game now has more strategic complexity because to this change, which reduces the first batting power play to four overs.
