The procedures lasted 3 hours and were performed in an ortho theatre using a C-arm. The cardiology team from the Department of Medicine was directed by Senior Consultants Dr. Shameem Iqbal and Dr. Showkat H shah, Registrar, Dr Bilal Ganie, with full assistance from the anaesthetic department, theatre technical and nursing staff, and other medical personnel. After the operations, the patients are doing well and are being released.

While thanking the team of physicians, Principal GMCA Dr (Prof) Tariq Syed Qureshi said that the facility would be of great help to the people of South Kashmir, especially older residents who would otherwise have to go to Srinagar or beyond the state for pacemaker implantation.

It is worth noting that the whole surgery was performed for free as part of the Ayushman Bharat initiative. Dr. Aubid H Malik, Medical Superintendent, complimented the team and said that management would always provide full logistics and support so that such treatments become common in the hospital.

Dr Ghulam Jeelani Romshoo, Head of the Department, Department of Medicine, stated that the Department of Medicine, GMCA is already performing noninvasive cardiac diagnostic procedures such as Echocardiography and TMT on a daily basis, and that this new invasive cardiac facility is a landmark milestone that will benefit the health care facility in South Kashmir. With the arrival of the “cath Lab facility,” which is now in the procurement process, the department is committed to undertake such sophisticated operations on a regular basis.
