Despite the government’s quick response to President Mehbooba Mufti’s news conference on affordable housing, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is concerned about the continued lack of openness.
The major issue of why there will be an increase in homeless “people” from 19047 in 2021 to over two lakh “households” remains unanswered, according to a party official.
The statement explained that the poorest landowners would receive aid in general and that there was a system in place to allot land to those without it from community lands like Kahcharai, state land, Khalisa, etc. “PMAY has been in operation for decades in the state under different titles, and a procedure has been in place that has always been monitored by the GoI itself, from identification to execution levels,” it said.
Doubts are cast on the dramatic rise based on the allegation that 2,000 recognised homeless families still exist. A defect in the procedure or questionable motives were suggested.
The spokesperson said the recent decision was made at the highest level shortly after Jammu began allocating housing to foreign employees. For the thousands of labourers, hawkers, and small sellers that go to the plains each winter, “Does any state in the country reciprocate this?” the statement asks.
On Wednesday, Mehbooba Mufti accused the administration of using the “land for landless people” banner to illegally settle foreign nationals in the former state.
